Virtual Pandemic Raffle
This year, we are holding a Virtual Pandemic raffle to raise funds for our Annual Service Grants.  We would like to collect restaurants’ gift certificates, and bottles of wine and liquor to be raffled during the month of May.  This is an excellent opportunity for you to support your favorite small business restaurants and liquor shop owners both locally, as well as your Rotary Club.

It would be wonderful if every member could donate both a bottle of their favorite wine or liquor and at least one $25 restaurant gift card.  In addition, sponsorships for our website will be available for sale.

Raffle tickets will be $10 each.  One hundred percent of all proceeds will go to our local Grants Fund.  Last year’s grant gifts total was $10,000.   Would it be wonderful to not only meet but exceed this amount during a pandemic year, where there are many deserving organizations serving our most needed citizens?   You could make this possible.

All grants will be awarded on June 11, 2021, during our regular meeting.   I hope you will feel as excited as I am with this Raffle.  I am grateful to our Board of Directors, and especially to Marie Angelides for organizing this fundraiser.

Support Rotary Foundation

Three ways to support our Rotary Foundation

Every November, we celebrate The Rotary Foundation. Your support and generous gifts to the Foundation make it possible for us to be people of action and engage in life-changing projects worldwide. Here are three ways you can help maximize the effectiveness of our year-end giving campaigns and increase the amount of good we can do:
  1. Encourage your members to make a gift to the Foundation on Giving Tuesday, which is 1 December. Share our video message
  2. Give the gift of Rotary this holiday season. Share our digital flyer with members and potential donors.
  3. Learn more about our new peer-to-peer fundraising tool, Raise for Rotary, where you can create fundraising pages that are easy to share with family and friends through social media and email.

President’s Message

April 29, 2021

Fellow Rotarians,

I am happy and proud to announce the first Rotary Club of Springfield hybrid meeting.  It was a plan dreamed initially by our past president Bert Carter, who commissioned me to make it possible.  It took almost one and a half years, but this Friday, we will have the first in-person meeting in more than a year for members that had completed their vaccination and waiting periods, combined with a virtual meeting for those who can’t be present. We are strictly following CDC rules regarding social distancing for the health of our older and health-compromised members. Still, as vaccination progress and more member are vaccinated, we hope to be together soon.

In the meantime, we are continually working on all necessary steps to register our Club with the Massachusetts AG. This action is required to announce a raffle to the public to raise funds for our Club.  Thanks to Marie Angelides for all the work and great attention to detail she contributed to this project.

Just calling this year challenging would be an enormous understatement.  We learned new ways to manage our personal lives, family life and keeping our Club viable and running.  We had made a few changes (e.g., meetings every two weeks) to adjust to our new realities, but we are encouraged by the support from all members with all the service projects we had planned and executed.  I am very proud of all of you.

Recently, a member told me that I am the equivalent of a “war president” due to the current pandemic.   We had many challenges that we confronted and solved during the year, but my mind is permanently fixed on our motto, “Service Above Self.”   Our motto drives and motivates me to be persistent, resilient, and inventive to find new ways to serve our fellow citizens and our city. Thank you for your support.

In service,

John D.
