President's Message
Sue Mastroianni
March 22, 2019

Dear Fellow Rotarians, 💐🌼

Last Friday, we enjoyed a wonderful meeting at the Irish Cultural Center in W. Springfield, where many of us got into the spirit with the wearing of the green!  This was our 2nd Annual St. Patrick’s celebration at the ICC and one I’m sure we’ll repeat.

Sean Cahillane, President and Founder of the Irish Cultural Center of Western New England (ICC) gave us a brief talk about the history, mission and amenities of the ICC. In addition to the Irish House Restaurant and Trinity Pub, there is a library, outdoor patio and soon to be completed banquet hall. All facilities are open the public.

This Friday, Dr. Jay Burton, a Baystate physician and cancer survivor will be our speaker. Dr. Burton created the non-profit, Survivor Journeys, a community-based support network that provides cancer support to survivors and their caregivers.

We’ll pick the next seven raffle prizewinners along with our February and March birthday raffle winners.  Check the bulletin for a complete listing of all raffle winners to date. You don’t have to be present to win, but it’s certainly exciting if you are!

Invite a guest to join you at Rotary this week and experience all we have to offer.

Be well.

President Sue Mastroianni

TODAY IS...
March 22nd is Be As Young As You Feel Day! You may have heard the phrases, "you are only as old as you feel," or "you are as young as you feel." They both mean that no matter what your age, if you feel young, and live your life in such a way as if you were young, age really doesn't matter. There may even be some scientific truth to the phrases. Today puts a focus on working to act and feel as young as you can. Today also gives you an excuse to do so, and no one can judge you for really letting loose. The day was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holidays, who said, "Now more than ever you are as young as you feel. So stop acting your chronological age and get out there and start feeling peppy!"

Dr. Jay Burton, a Baystate physician and cancer survivor will be our speaker. Dr. Burton created the non-profit, Survivor Journeys,  a community-based support network that provides cancer support to survivors and their caregivers. Its origins began during the year-long medical quarantine Dr Jay Burton lived through after his stem cell transplant for Acute Myeloid Leukemia which ended in late October 2011. Dr Burton’s emotional and social support experiences prompted speaking engagements about cancer survivorship. The community interest generated from these talks, as well as the lack of emotional and support services for cancer survivors in our region, led to the creation of Survivor Journeys.  https://www.survivorjourneys.org

WE NEED YOUR HELP
Dene Kimball could use a little help with displaying our Rotary flags at meetings. Dene is planning some extended vacation time soon and would like a few Rotarians to volunteer and put up the flags while he’s away (or give him a break now and then). The flags are stored at Max’s and only take a few minutes to put up or take down. Please talk to Dene about helping out. And thank you for your participation in helping to display our flags!
