Paul Harris and Community Grant Celebration The Rotary Club of Springfield celebrated its 102nd Anniversary by presenting two Paul Harris Fellowship Awards and giving away $6,000 in grants to deserving Springfield charitable organizations. The Club is proud to announce its 102nd Paul Harris Fellow Awards were awarded to Peter Lappin and Jack Toner. Six community service grants have been given to following recipients: The Springfield Rescue Mission, Stone Soul, Inc., New England Public Radio, The Gray House, Inc., The Springfield Museums and Dakin Humane Society Club President Laurie A. Rosner, Chair of the Undergraduate Business Programs at Bay Path University says "we want to show our commitment to the Springfield community and what Rotary is doing locally that evening. We are dedicated to service above self. We are happy to host a fun community celebration for individuals and organizations who are making a positive difference!” THIS WEEK GUEST SPEAKER Bob Cahillane, former naval and Blue/Gold officer for the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD and a member of the Northampton Rotary Club will address the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon meeting on Friday, May 19th. Bob will discuss his efforts over the last ten years of getting young men & women into and out of the U.S. Naval Academy. (Rotarian John Perez will introduce Bob. John’s son John, is now a 2Lt., USMC after graduating from the Academy a few years ago.) “As a former enlisted sailor, I consider it an honor to represent the school these nine plus years,” says Bob. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and is past president of the World War II Veterans Club and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, VFW and American Legion. Among his many activities, Bob was past Exalted Ruler of the Northampton Lodge of Elks 997, retired Director of Veterans Service for the City of Northampton, past President of the MA Veterans Service Officers Association and past Area Chairman for ESGR, Employers Support for the Guard and Reserve. Along with his brothers, Bob was past owner of Cahillane Motors, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep for more than 30 years. Leadership, inclusive community values to be saluted Ellen Weiss Freyman is one of the people being honored at the annual human relations award banquet of the New England based NationalConference for Community and Justice. Ellen Freyman is a partner with Shatz, Schwartz & Fentin, and is vice chair of the executive committee of the NCCJ board. She has received numerous awards during her career including the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly's Top Women of Law Award in 2010; an Advertising Club's Pynchon Award in 2012, and a 2015 Friendship Award from the Western Massachusetts Refugee and Immigrant Consortium. Ellen is a graduate of the Western New England University School of Law and Pennsylvania State University. The NCCJ is celebrating its 90th year. According to its website, the organization was founded in 1927 as the National Conference for Christians and Jews, in response to "anti-Catholic sentiment being expressed during Al Smith's run for the Democratic nomination." Founders included social activists such, as Jane Addams, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes.Today its programs address such issues as bullying, more inclusive work environments and interfaith outreach. District Training Assembly Gillian, Lamont, Laurie, Bert and Alisa attended the Rotary District Training Assembly last Wednesday in Enfield, CT. The Assembly included breakout session for the 59 Presidents-elect, Secretaries-elect, Treasurers-elect and Membership Chairs. There were also breakout sessions for all members on topics including the Foundation, membership, public relations, strategic planning and new member orientation. |
