Greetings Fellow Rotarians

If you missed last week’s yoga-filled meeting, you may not know that Sue Mastroiani was triumphant in the Rotary Club raffle, winning more than $300! She will be starting a vacation to Anguilla Friday. Coincidence? You decide.

At this week’s luncheon we will be welcoming Tony Cignoli of AL Cignoli Co., a public relations firm in Springfield. Tony will help us sort out the constant stream of tweets, sound bites and delegate counts of this historic election.

Please support Alicia Garcia in her work with the Duggan Academy in the month of May. You will be able to share with middle school students your career experiences. The project place Rotary in the trenches to help the young men and women of Springfield. Please contact Alicia at alicia.garcia022@gmail.com to participate.

I want to again thank all of you for giving your time, talent and treasure to the Service Above Self Luncheon this past December. We received a check for $3,500 for our Club Service Fund from the Basketball Hall of Fame April 15^th, 2016. Alicia Garcia and Sue Lavoie will be leading our service efforts going forward. They will be coordinating the Club’s service efforts to create a ripple effect of positive good through a combination of hands on service and financial support of organizations in Springfield.

I delighted to welcome new member Joe Dumpson to our Club. We will be officially inducting him this coming Friday. Joe is the Springfield Housing Authority's Family Self-Sufficiency Coordinator. Among other duties, he leads the walking school bus program to encourage good health and a greater sense of community through walking to school. Thank you to Michelle Booth for bringing Joe to the Club, and giving the gift of Rotary to Joe.

Rotary districts mobilize to support survivors of Ecuador, Japan quakes
After a series of three earthquakes -- two in Japan and one in Ecuador -- killed hundreds of people, injured thousands, and caused billions of dollars in damage late last week, Rotary members in those regions have created disaster relief funds to help survivors. In Ecuador, the powerful 7.8-magnitude quake that struck Saturday night has killed more than 400 people, with 2,500 injured. Those figures are expected to rise. Celebration to Present Awards & Grants

The Rotary Club of Springfield will be celebrating our 101st Anniversary at The Colony Club in Springfield on Wednesday, May 12, 2016 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. We will mark the event by presenting three Paul Harris Fellowship Awards and giving away $4,000 in grants to deserving Springfield charitable organizations.

Club President Jack Toner says "we want to show the community what Rotary is doing in our community that evening, not simply tell them and we're going to have fun doing it. We are happy to host a community celebration for individuals and organizations who are making a positive difference!”

Andrew Morehouse, executive director of The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts since 2005, is being awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Springfield Rotarians Jay L. Leib and Rick Lee are being recognized for their support of the Rotary Foundation." Morehouse is responsible for overseeing the management of the organization, and building partnerships with individuals, organizations, businesses and government entities at all levels.

Jay L. Leib has nominated his significant other Sue Orenstein. ‘Sue is an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to children and the love of learning” says Leib. Orenstein recently retired after teaching for over 20 years at The Wheeler School in Providence, RI.

Rick Lee has nominated his good friend Mike Garreffi, News Director at 22News, for a Paul Harris Fellowship. Lee says “It is my pleasure to use this opportunity to offer a public thank you to a very private man who has worked hard to serve our community well over nearly four decades.”

The KEVS Foundation, The Gray House and Springfield Public Libraries are the 2016 community grants recipients. The KEVS Foundation will receive a $2,000 grant for general outreach. The goal of KEVS Foundation is to educate and help prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in children and young adults. The Gray House will receive a $1,000 grant for their Kids Club Summer Program. The mission of The Gray House is “To help its neighbors facing hardships to meet their immediate and transitional needs by providing food, an after school program and educational services in a safe, positive environment in the North End of Springfield.” The Springfield Libraries will receive a $1,000 grant for their “Science on the Go” project – hands on science kits for Springfield children.

The event is open to the public and tickets are $55 per person. Admission includes appetizers, dinner and a cash bar on the elegant Colony Club's outdoor patio (weather permitting). Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be sold at the door. They may be purchased at our regular Friday luncheon, or online by clicking on the Paul Harris Medal on this page:

Duggan Middle School Project

Our spring service project is underway, focused on interesting students in potential career paths. Students will be doing mock interviews of volunteering Rotarians as a form of research in developing their potential career interest. The classroom will use the FOUR WAY TEST as one form of their rubric. Please note the students will be taking photos to use in their posters when they present to the club in our general meeting on June 10th.

The project needs four Rotarians for each session. Please consider participating and RESERVE the date you would like to attend. Under school rules, you must complete a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) from the Springfield Public School website or in person. A copy of your driver's license is also required.
