Friday's luncheon speaker Sy Becker of 22News will recall the most inspirational people and stories from his interviews over the thirteen year run of the annual Hometown Heroes breakfast. From local heroes of September 11th 2001 to public safety personnel who went beyond the call of duty to save a live, to an elderly woman who battled an alligator for the life of her friend, Sy's nearly 100 Hero interviewees have been from all ages, races and backgrounds. A couple of them were not even human!
Time permitting, he will also offer a private "Look At the Movies," for you at this Friday's luncheon meeting.
Sy joined 22News as a general assignment reporter and Movie Critic in July of 1979. His popular “Sy’s Look at the Movies” series is a feature of 22News.
Sy holds numerous awards in broadcast news and movie reviewing excellence. He has the distinction of winning “Best Movie Reviewer” in the Springfield Advocate and Valley Advocate Reader’s Poll since 1993.
Sy is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He attended City College of New York and the School of Radio and Television in New York.
Sheriff Michael Ashe will receive the Paul Harris Fellowship Award at the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Springfield on May 20th at the Colony Club in downtown Springfield. The Paul Harris Award is the highest honor local Rotary Clubs bestow on local Rotarians or community leaders who embody the Rotary mission of "Service Above Self."
The presentation will be part of a celebration of 100 years of service to the community by the Club. The same evening the Club will award ten $1,000 grants to small local charities and three Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) scholarships to an all-day Rotary leadership training for you people set fot Springfield College in June of this year. Approximately 150 Rotarians and community leaders are expected to attend the cocktail and hors d'ouevres event to be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Tickets are $50 and proceeds will benefit future Rotary Service grants and work in the community.
Sheriff Ashe, Jr. holds a Bachelor's degree from St. Anselm's College and a Masters degree in Social Work from Boston College. After graduate school, he and his wife Barbara served as the first house parents of Downey Side Homes for Youth. Sheriff Ashe also served as Downey Side's first assistant director. He was elected Sheriff of Hampden County in 1974. He has been re-elected five times since, without opposition. Sheriff Ashe's motto of supervision is: "Strength Reinforced with Decency; Firmness Dignified with Fairness."
Sheriff Ashe strongly believes that the inmate who desires to build a law-abiding life should be challenged with the tools and directions to do so, and that this should take place in a safe, secure, orderly, demanding and humane environment.
Sheriff Ashe has a "40 hour work week" policy for sentenced inmates, resulting in their averaging over 40 hours of work or other productive activities each week. Sheriff Ashe believes that those incarcerated at his facility should "answer the bell" for a productive day each morning, just like the taxpayers who pay for their incarceration do, and just like they will have to do to lead productive law-abiding lives when they are released.
The Cambodian Medical Clinic Foundation will hold its third wine-tasting event at the Springfield Country Club on Friday, April 17th from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The cost of the event is $35 and will includes both wine and beer tasting this year for the first and both hot hors d’oeuvres, pasta and other foods plus desserts. As Rotarians, 100% of the $35 goes to purchase water filters, a major project for Rotarians all over the world. The clinic services 2,000 patients a month with most of them having internal diseases caused from drinking the filthy Mekong River. Water filters are a very important method of prevention of diseases for the clinic allowing people to drink clean water rather than the filthy river. One of our Springfield Rotarians has given $1,200 to purchase 100 water filters. We are looking to match his donation so that we can purchase an additional 100 water filters. Tickets may be purchased from Marie Angelides or Mary Anne Herron at our Friday meetings or at the door on April 17th. Join us and plan to be a partner.
District Governor Michael Roy has chosen the theme Light Up Rotary, Shine on District 7890. The conference will be held in our District so all members can easily attend and share in the celebration of another great year in Rotary. So, please join us at the Hartford Marriott on Friday, April 24th and Saturday, April 25th.
