President's Message

I wish everyone are in good health as you read these lines.  Our president Bert asked me to cover for him and lead the last and next Friday meetings (thanks Sue for the clarification on the right term) and to write the president’s message for the next two weeks.

Last Friday our speaker, Charles “Chuck” Alfano, the Western Massachusetts Director of the National Christ Child Society shared a compelling and heart-felt presentation of how his organization, through the “Challenging Poverty” initiative provides chapters and other non-profit organizations with education, consultation and financial support to help deliver programs with maximum impact.  They focus in three areas; building literacy, empowering children and their families and meeting families in poverty basic needs such as coats, shoes, hats, scarves and gloves.  They had also worked in Haiti, providing basing literacy classes to the general population, mostly uneducated due to the extremely poverty in the country.   As we have a similar mission in many areas, we will look forward to collaborating, and to serve our community more effectively.

As is usual in the summer months, attendance was light, but we were energized and moved by our speaker stories and the fellowship with our fellow Rotarians.  Please remember our commitment to volunteer to serve dinner at Friend of the Homeless, September 5th.

Our Water Project “Clean Water for Cambodia” is moving forward with an award of a Rotary’s District Grant of $2,500 and matching contribution from our club and our members.  In October, we will be ordering 250 new water filters units and 50 replacement ceramic inserts for the filters we had previously distributed.  These units will impact around 1,500 residents of the Phoum Thom, a village in the Lvea District, 40 miles from the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.

Thanks to all Rotarians for your contributions.

Be well,

John David, Rotary Club Vice President

FRIDAY'S GUEST SPEAKER

Teresa LibertI - Gray House

New Project at the Gray House

The mission of The Gray House is “to help its neighbors facing hardships to meet their immediate and transitional needs by providing food, clothing and educational services in a safe, positive environment in the North End of Springfield.”

Our mission is fulfilled by operating the Market, Adult Education Program and Kids’ Club.

In addition to our mission, The Gray House continues to operate in accordance with the belief of our founding Sisters, that The Gray House be “a place where peace is lived and learned, and hope is shared.” This belief has helped us create a welcoming, encouraging and supportive environment, which assures our neighbors they will be treated with respect and dignity when they come to the Gray House.
