President's Message
Sue Mastroianni
March 22, 2019

Dear Fellow Rotarians, 💐🌼

Last Friday, we had a great meeting with Dr. Jay Burton, a Baystate physician and cancer survivor. Dr. Burton created the non-profit, Survivor Journeys, a community-based support network that provides cancer support to survivors and their caregivers. Please see the bulletin for more information on how to access this important organization.

This Friday, we will have a couple of special guests joining us. John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame and Frank Colaccino, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Governor; CEO of the Colvest Group and Committee Chair of the 2018 Service Above Self Luncheon Committee. John and Frank will make a contribution to our club from the proceeds of the 9th Annual Service Above Self luncheon held at the Basketball Hall of Fame last November. Thank you John and Frank!

We will also have our District Governor; Kate Sims give us an update on our district’s newly formed opioid task force. Kate has been a Rotarian of the Manchester Rotary Club in Manchester, CT for 9 years and was President of the club in FY 13 /14.

Our March calendar raffle is winding down (along with the month) and we will pick the final three raffle prizewinners. Check the bulletin for a complete listing of all winners to date. You don’t have to be present to win, but it’s certainly exciting if you are!

Invite a guest to join you at Rotary this week and experience all we have to offer.

Be well.

TODAY IS...
March 29th is National Vietnam War Veterans Day! On this day it is appropriate to thank a Vietnam veteran for their service. Many veterans felt as if they didn't receive a proper homecoming, and it may mean much to them to let them know you appreciate the sacrifice they made to serve their country. It is also appropriate to fly the American flag on this day.

Pictured L to R: Jay Presser, President Sue Mastroianni and Guest Speaker Dr. Jay Burton
Last Friday we had a great meeting with Dr. Jay Burton, a Baystate physician and cancer survivor will be our speaker. Dr. Burton created the non-profit, Survivor Journeys,  a community-based support network that provides cancer support to survivors and their caregivers. Its origins began during the year-long medical quarantine Dr Jay Burton lived through after his stem cell transplant for Acute Myeloid Leukemia which ended in late October 2011. Dr Burton’s emotional and social support experiences prompted speaking engagements about cancer survivorship. The community interest generated from these talks, as well as the lack of emotional and support services for cancer survivors in our region, led to the creation of Survivor Journeys.  https://www.survivorjourneys.org
This Friday, join us as we welcome District Governor Kate Sims as our speaker. Kate will talk about the succession of our district and the district’s newly formed opioid task force. Kate has been a Rotarian of the Manchester Rotary Club in Manchester CT for 9 years and was President of the club in FY 13 /14.    On the District Level she is the past Chair of Rotaract, past AG for Area 5 and DG for District 7890 year 2108/2019. WE NEED YOUR HELP
Dene Kimball could use a little help with displaying our Rotary flags at meetings. Dene is planning some extended vacation time soon and would like a few Rotarians to volunteer and put up the flags while he’s away (or give him a break now and then). The flags are stored at Max’s and only take a few minutes to put up or take down. Please talk to Dene about helping out. And thank you for your participation in helping to display our flags!
