We were reminded over the weekend of the cost of hatred in the horrific killings of eleven Jewish people at a synagogue in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. We pray for those who were lost and are reminded of the continued need for people and organizations like Rotary working to promote peace and understanding in the face of such hatred and unspeakable cruelty in our world.
It’s also been a whirlwind week with epic baseball games (18 innings anyone?) and a World Series win for the Red Sox! GO SOX!!!! The Yankee fans in our club have taken their loss well and we commend them.
This past Friday we had a Spooktacular meeting as several of us got into the Halloween spirit.
There were plenty of treats to go around and lots of laughs. We also had a “Member Spotlight” with Bob Dambrov, Allen Grosnick, Paul Lambert and Peter Pappas. Thank you to all four for sharing their personal stories with us. It was interesting to hear what other interests and experiences our friends have had. Thank you!

Ben Quick, Executive Director of Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club (PVRC) since the Spring of 2016 will speak to our club this Friday. Previously, he was a parent-volunteer and a competitive rower with the Masters Crew. In the Fall of 2014, he began Erg* workouts and competed in the March 2015 Rockrimmon Regatta. * Modern indoor rowers are often known as ergometers (colloquially erg or ergo), an ergometer being a device which measures the amount of work performed.
Our club will be serving dinner at Friends of The Homeless on Thursday, November 1, 2018, from 4:15-530PM. They are located at 755 Worthington St in Springfield. Those who have participated know what a rewarding experience it is. (This is the same night as the Rotary Foundation dinner and Habitat for Humanity’s Fall Feastival. If you can possibly help serve it would be greatly appreciated) Hope to see you there.
Samalid Hogan is part of The Power of Women, the latest book authored and edited by Wayne E. Phaneuf, executive editor of The Republican, and historian Joseph Carvalho III, highlights influential women from the 1600s until present day. "This book was written mostly by women, for women and to women," Phaneuf said, adding that 1,000 women are featured in the book. "This book celebrates what was a long and trying struggle (for equality) that lasted way too long." Congratulations to Samalid for being a part of this historic book.

Last Week’s Meeting was pretty “Spooktacular” if not downright scary (see attached pic). There were lots of treats given out and a lot of laughs. We also had a MEMBER SPOTLIGHT on Peter Pappas, Bob Dambrov, Allen Grosnick and Paul Lambert. We learned a lot about the members “we thought we knew!” Thanks Guys! You all did a great job.
