Dear Fellow Rotarians,
 
We had another great meeting this past Friday, 3/24, when Dr. Calvin Hill, V.P. for Inclusion and Community Engagement at Springfield College spoke to us about "connecting across differences."
 
Remember to read the Rotarian magazine that you received last week…looking forward to Rowland’s quiz at our next meeting!  This Friday’s meeting is where we will welcome Mike Abramson, Assistant General Manager of the Hartford Yard Goats…see more details in our bulletin.
 
We are looking to give out $6,000 in service grants at our Paul Harris and Community Grant Celebration.  SAVE THE DATE!  Please join us on Thursday, May 11.  Thank you to Brennan and his committee for leading and organizing this important event and Alicia for coordinating the Grant application process and details. 
 
We have officially kicked-off our service fund fundraiser.  Each year we ask members to donate $100 to this fund so we may continue to make a positive and direct difference in our Springfield Community. Service grants are awarded to area non-profits for capital improvements.  We thank those who have donated to our Service Fund already this year 2016/17 and ask if you have not had the chance to donate you may make your donation online or at any club meeting.  Our online donation links are below:
 
 
 
At last week’s meeting I pledged to double my donation to the service fund if 10 other club members make their annual donation of $100 to the service fund by Friday, April 7th!  Join the cause to help others and continue to make a positive difference.  Several members have stepped up and have made their pledges!  Thank you!
 
Lamont was unable to provide an update this past Friday about his experience and details attending PET…so much going on at our meetings!  We look forward to Lamont sharing his update this Friday.  I will be in class in NYC this coming Friday…I know you will have a great meeting…thanks Lamont!

Mike Abramson, Assistant General Manager for The Hartford Yard Goats will address the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon meeting on Friday, March 31st. Mike’s topic will be “Professional Baseball in Hartford is Good News for Springfield”.
 
The Hartford Yard Goats are a Double-A minor league baseball team in Hartford, Connecticut in the Eastern League. The team was founded in 2016, when the New Britain Rock Cats, a Colorado Rockies affiliate, relocated to Hartford, Connecticut. The Yard Goats are scheduled to move into Dunkin' Donuts Park on Main Street in Hartford, at the beginning of the 2017 season. Construction delays forced the team to play the entire 2016 season on the road.
 
Mike is in his 11th season in Minor League Baseball, and 5th as Assistant General Manager with the organization. Mike oversees all sponsorship & ticket sales for the team, and handles marketing strategies and activation.  Prior to joining the Yard Goats, Mike spent six seasons with the Pawtucket Red Sox; Triple-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Mike began his career in sales with Sports Radio WEEI; then the highest-rated sports radio station in the country. Mike lives in Chester, CT with his wife Allison and daughters Emma, Sophia and Clara.

BEER & WINE TASTING TO BENEFIT COMBODIAN FOUNDATION
 
Please join us for The Cambodian Medical Clinic's 5th Annual Wine & Beer Tasting Event. This year there are four craft beer breweries and featured wine. The wine and beer vendors include Nick DeCesare Wine Distributing Company, New City Brewery, Lefty’s Brewing Company, Scantic Brewery and Opa Opa Brewery.Hot hors d’oeuvres, pasta stations, fruit, crackers and cheese buffet, and Desserts provided by La Forentina Bakery will complement the tasting. Opportunities to win amazing raffle prizes and participate in fun games to win bottles of wine will be a part of the evening. We look forward to seeing you!

Rotary members meet with EU officials to examine Rotary’s role in achieving peace
 
More than 240 Rotary members and other guests gathered in Brussels, Belgium, on 8 March for Rotary at the European Union, a special event that explored how Rotary and the European Union can work together to achieve peace.
The meeting was the first of its kind at the European Union (EU) and was modeled on the tradition of Rotary Day at the United Nations. Rotary members, EU officials, and business leaders at the two-hour event asked how business and civil society organizations like Rotary can work with the EU to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and build more peaceful and stable societies.
