Last Friday's presentation from Cathy Donor spoke to the reason’s we do what we do in Rotary. Cathy has accompanied our own Mary Anne Herron to Cambodia to help implement our water filter project there. She shared a video of the process to manufacture the filter inserts that we provide for the village in Cambodia. She also shared her impressions of her trip and what she saw at the factory and in the village. A lively Q&A session followed. It was really good for us to see and understand the level of poverty and the lack of sophistication that the villagers are dealing with. It really is beyond our comprehension how people in third world countries survive. The simple solution of water filters can make such a huge difference.
Last year the West Springfield Rotary club asked us to participate in their service project providing technology and hygiene for a school in an impoverished school in India. We contributed $1000, which helped them receive matching funds from a District Grant. On September 24 at 12:15 at their regular club meeting, they will be presenting a slide show of the work they did. They have invited all the clubs who assisted with funds. The meeting will be at Career TECH on Bush Hill Avenue in West Springfield. I plan to attend, all are welcome.
Next week we will not be meeting because of the Labor Day holiday. It’s hard to believe that the summer is coming to an end. As we buckle down for the fall, we look forward to seeing more of you at the Friday meetings.
In Service,
Bert

Club members in attendance were fascinated by the presentation as evidenced by the number of questions.

A new vitality is energizing Springfield’s city center restaurant community as Springfield’s Downtown District Loan Fund, a low-interest lending effort designed to enhance the downtown dining experience, begins to produce results.
Started in February of 2017, the Fund has already been instrumental in the development of two new dining options - BarKaya and Naismith's Pub & Pretzel, both of which now occupy space on Springfield's Worthington Street "restaurant row."
